Throughout the years Google released varying crawlers to scour and index content. Google noticed that they couldn’t index some mobile-optimized sites because some Webmasters were inadvertently blocking smartphone crawling and/or indexing when in reality they only wanted to block feature phone crawling and/or indexing.
This vagueness has led to deprecation of Googlebot-mobile and from now on will be identified just as Googlebot and will include “mobile” else where.
